Hans Hofmann (American, b. Germany, 1880–1966)
Relocating from Munich to New York City in 1933, Hans Hofmann (American, b.1880 – d.1966) was to become one of the most prominent figures of Abstract Expressionism. Hofmann worked both as a teacher and an independent painter, gaining recognition late in his career with his first solo exhibition taking place at the age of 64 at Peggy Guggenheim’s New York “Art of this Century” gallery. Hofmann soon garnered the critical support of Clement Greenberg and came to term his style “push and pull”, denoting the tension between form, color and space. He is best known for his vivid “slab” works of the late 1950s.
In overall very good condition with some wear to all four corners, one pinhole in each as in keeping with artist process. Two minor creases along upper edge.
