Description: TAFT, HELEN “NELLIE” HERRON. (1861-1943). First lady of the United States from 1909-1913. Free Frank. (“Helen H. Taft Free”). 1p. 12mo. (Washington, D.C., February 17, 1941.) A typed envelope addressed to Robert A. Wilson in Baltimore. ********** Nellie Herron was the daughter of a judge whose law partner was Rutherford B. Hayes and who had been a classmate of Benjamin Harrison. Her maternal grandfather and uncle were congressmen. She married William Howard Taft in 1886 and fostered his political career, despite his preference for the legal profession. He attained increasingly important judicial appointments before becoming Governor-General of the Philippines, secretary of war and president in 1909. Despite being impaired by a stroke as first lady, Nellie started many enduring traditions including overseeing the planting of more than 3,000 cherry trees around the Capitol. In 1921, Taft was appointed to the Supreme Court and they returned to Washington where Nellie was a prominent member of society who supported numerous causes and spoke against prohibition. ********** The black ink postmark touches the first name of the signature and there is a light vertical fold; in very good condition.
