Asia, Himalayan or Nepalese, ca. early 20th century CE. A finely carved and painted grimacing demon mask with huge, bulging eyes, a large open mouth bearing teeth, fangs, and tongue, an upturned, snout-like nose with openwork nostrils, and a third eye carved on the forehead. Contributing to the great energy of this piece is a headdress adorned with three skulls positioned between its pointed ears, a dramatically curled mustache and wavy brows, and a collar or jawline finely painted with a sinuous linear pattern framing the lower half of the mouth. Though the colors have darkened, nice red, white, black, green, and gold pigments remain. A wonderful and old example. Size: 7.5" W x 14.5" H (19 cm x 36.8 cm)
