She would remain unmarried her entire life, focusing instead on socially-critical works that emphasized human freedom and dignity. This nearly-forgotten late novel, Homo: The Novel of an Era, focuses on an orphaned boy from the Polish/Czech city of Homonna, which had been ravaged during World War I.
