Description: 11 July 1792 69 RHONE. LYON. Emprunt de 300 Livres. black. Bond issued 1792 by the Hôpital Générale de la Charité, Lyon, for a loan of 300 livres, paying interest at 4% per annum. The Hôpital was founded 1534, after a period of drought, to care for abandoned children and elderly 'clochards' (but also, temporarily, for some of the rural population fleeing the misery in the surrounding countryside). In 1614 it was acquired by the city of Lyon, and a new hospital was built, starting 1617, completed 1633, and fulfilling the same purpose. This was quite large, with 14 buildings and 9 courtyards. In the 19th century, it became a hospital to care for the sick. The building was in a poor state by 1934, deemed unhealthy, and demolished (except for the clock-tower, preserved after a public petition). The new Hôtel des Postes was built on the site. Arms of the charity. Not seen before by us and originating from an old collection. Rarity 12.
