More About this Item

Description: Hugh Bolton Jones
American, 1848-1927
Summer Day with Stream in South Egremont (Mass.)
Oil on canvas
27 x 33 inches

Provenance:
The artist
Dr. Arthur and Mrs. Kathleen S. Chace, New York
Thence by descent in the family to the current owner.

Hugh Bolton Jones was a cousin of Mrs. Kathleen S. Chace (nee Kathleen Stirling Fletcher); both were raised in Maryland and eventually settled in New York. Ultimately, Jones divided his time between New York City and a summer cottage in South Egremont, MA, where the present work, as well as many others, were painted.

Condition Report: Wax lining, stretchers not original. Light surface grime and slightly yellowed varnish; would benefit from a cleaning. Very little evidence of inpaint under UV exam aside from two small 1/2 inch wide strokes of inpaint in the sky and a few additional minuscule touches. No inpaint apparent in the main body of the composition. Slight frame rubbing at upper edge.
