AFTER THE ANTIQUE | bust of Niobe's daughter
26 October 2016
London, United KingdomLive Auction
Overall, the condition of the marble is good, with minor dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age. There is particular dirt in the crevices of the hair and ears. The bust and the socle are carved separately, and the bust rocks slightly on the base but is stable. There is some veining to the marble, including to the forehead and to the proper right shoulder. There are a few small naturally occurring inclusions, particularly to the neck and to the socle. There are a few light scratches, notably to the nose. There are few small chips, including to the bottom edge of the truncation to the reverse, to the top and bottom edge of the socle. There is some brown residue to the back of the bust at the bottom and the edge. There is some plaster residue around the joint at the base.
