A CASED 12-BORE PINFIRE DOUBLE-BARRELLED HAMMER SPORTING-GUN, serial no. 5551,
for 1858/59, possibly converted from percussion to pinfire, with 28 1/2in. damascus barrels, narrow raised rib signed ''J. PURDEY, 314 1/2 OXFORD STREET LONDON'' (renewed), carved pinfire fences, border and scroll engraved back-action locks signed ''PURDEY'', scroll engraved dolphin headed hammers, engraved Jones patent rotary underlever, trigger-guard bow with stop, figured walnut stock chequered at the wrist, chequered walnut fore-end with crosspin release, engraved iron heel-plate, some shallow pitting to furniture pieces; TOGETHER WITH a period oak storage case from another, the interior compartmented and lined in green baize, blue printed parchment ''Purdey'' trade-label to inside of lid and complete with two unloaded modern brass cartridge hulls


Provenance: A note accompanying the gun states that it was completed in 1859 for a Mr C.R. Hartford at the cost of £57
