The original drawing for this print was executed in 1939 and is listed in Hilary Pyle's The Different Worlds of Jack B. Yeats His Cartoons and Illustrations [no. 1278, p.175]. The original was exhibited at London Leger in 1940. It was reproduced in Dublin Poets and Artists no. 2 (Gayfield Press, 1939) accompanying the poem 'The Jackdaw' by P. Colum.
Published by Gayfield Press in a limited edition featuring contemporary work by poets and artists. Saddling Bell anticipates the large painting of 1953, My Beautiful, My Beautiful! [Pyle no. 1157], in the tenderness of the emotional bond between man and mount.
