Author: James Weddell - James Weddell was a British sailor, navigator and seal hunter who in February 1823 sailed to latitude of 74°15′S (a record 7.69 degrees or 532 statute miles south of the Antarctic Circle) and into a region of the Southern Ocean that later became known as the Weddell Sea.

Condition / Notes: This is a scarce first edition of this landmark work on Antarctic exploration. This volume is an ex-library book, with pin hole stamps, bookplate, and attachment on the rear paste-down. The gray cloth exterior shows a faint crack at the head of the spine, and scattered soiling and moisture markings, with faded lettering to the spine. The hinges are cracked, and have been reinforced with archival tape. The title page shows spots of soiling, and the aquatint frontispiece displays spots of soiling and a library pin hole stamp. An errata slip is tipped in at the front of the volume. The first folding map and the first page of text are loose.
The interior of this work is largely clean and bright, with foxing present on and near the plates.
This volume has been collated. It has 276 pages, with no gaps in pagination found. It contains a color frontispiece, eight maps, including six fold out maps, three plates, and two fold out plates. Loss to the plates/maps was noted as follows:
