Japan, Yamagata Prefecture (northern Honshu), mid to late 20th century CE. An amazing chisel-done carving of a raptor, probably an eagle, in the sasano-bori style, a unique form of folk craft. The art is made using a special kind of chisel; the wood is left curled like the natural form of bird feathers. The raptor sits atop a tall wooden perch and has painted feathers, beak, and claws. A really cool piece of folk art. Size: 3.4" W x 9.5" H (8.6 cm x 24.1 cm)
