Commentaire : Les voyages de Corot en Italie furent décisifs à l'élaboration de son art et les cinquante années de création qui en découleront sont le fruit de ces longues observations de la nature croquée sur le vif lors de ces années d'exercice incessant à travers la campagne italienne. Il y capte la lumière et le discours poétique d'une nature généreuse et calme, puissante et apaisante. Fort des leçons retenues en Italie, Corot est désormais prêt pour s'attaquer au paysage de France, à des cieux nuageux plus tourmentés et à des effets de lumières plus changeants et violents.

Dans notre tableau peint vers 1840 le ciel et le sol reflètent une incroyable force, les personnages et les moulins sont en action. Ce tableau vit : tout est puissance dans un si petit format. Il s'agit véritablement d'un chef-d'œuvre de Corot mais aussi d'un chef-d'œuvre de la peinture de plein air du XIXe siècle. Le sens du mouvement accompagne la lecture de la toile, les reflets sur le cerclage des roues de la charrette semblent sonner sur le sol rocailleux, la position du jeune fermier légèrement en avant et lançant ainsi son cheval, rênes relevées et assise soulagée ; voilà l'incroyable talent de Corot exposé devant nos yeux.

Le jeune Corot fut coursier chez Monsieur Delalain, marchand drapier. Il se lia d'amitié avec sa famille pour laquelle il réalisera cinq portraits, notamment avec le gendre de son ancien compagnon employeur Monsieur Popelain Delalain. Il séjourna à de nombreuses reprises dans leurs propriétés familiales à Bourberouge dans les environs de Mortain.
Notre tableau fut offert par Corot avec son pendant, La rentrée des foins en Beauce (fig.1)1, à la famille Popelain-Delalain. Les deux tableaux appartenaient encore jusqu'à une date récente à la descendance de cette famille. Le pendant à notre tableau fut présenté en 2008 en vente publique à Paris 2.

Taxes and VAT: In addition of the lot's hammer price, the buyer must pay the following costs and fees/taxes:

Lots from the EEC:
• From €1 to €30,000: 25% + current VAT (for books, VAT = 1,375%; for other categories, VAT = 5%).
• From €30,001 to €1,200,000: 20% + current VAT (for books, VAT = 1,1%; for other categories, VAT = 4%).
• Over €1,200,001: 12% + current VAT (for books, VAT = 0,66%; for other categories, VAT = 2,40%).
