Description: VT: FIRST STATE AFTER COLONIES ADOPTS THE LAWS OF THE UNITED STATES JEFFERSON, THOMAS. Printed Document Signed, "Th:Jefferson," as Secretary of State, a resolution of the First Congress: "An Act giving Effect to the Laws of the United States within the State of Vermont." 2 pages, 4to, with integral blank; upper and lower edges trimmed, faint scattered toning to first page, slight inkburn from signature to first page, folds, verso of blank mounted at upper and lower edges to sheet trimmed to size. Philadelphia, 2 March 1791

Notes: After passage of the acts admitting Vermont into the Union and establishing the number of its Representatives, the present document represents the first act in which Vermont is referred to as a state. The act declares that the U.S. laws are to take effect for the first time in that state, including those governing the U.S. judicial courts, the U.S. census, the U.S. marshal, and U.S. customs at the Alburgh office on Lake Champlain.
