Brussels, BelgiumLive Auction
Description: 31 July 1888 LIEGE. SERAING. 4% Obligation de F500, unissued. green, black. #15000. Folds. Apart from the famous - and expensive - 1846 share, this is the oldest Cockerill scripophily we know of. The loan amounted to 7,5 mio. francs and was marketed in Brussels, Liège, Huy, Antwerp and Frankfurt. Cockerill was a pioneer steel manufacturer, established in 1817. By 1850 it was the world's biggest factory and contributed heavily to the industrialisation of Belgium (at that time, Belgium had, only proceeded by the UK, the world's second industrial economy). After numerous acquisitions, it became known as Cockerill-Sambre in 1981. Taken over by the French group Usinor in 1999 so now part of Arcelor Mittal.
