Note: American painter John Chapman is best-known for the monumental painting The Baptism of Pocahontas which was commissioned by the US Congress in 1837 to decorate the rotunda of the Capital building. Chapman had studied in Italy as a young artist, and after the success of the rotunda work he moved his family to Italy where he painted scenes of local interest for American travelers. This painting was done during this period in his studio in Rome. One of Chapman''s sons, Conrad Wise Chapman, left Italy for America where he pursued his own career as a painter (see lot 36).
