Description: Portland, Oregon, Bank Book Signed during JFK’s 1960 Presidential Campaign ********** KENNEDY, JOHN F. (1917-1963). Thirty-fifth president of the United States. CS. (“John Kennedy”). 1p. 12mo. (Portland, Oregon, October, 1960). A blue ink signature on the verso of a First National Bank of Portland, Oregon, bank book formerly belonging to Pamela Jane Lord. ********** After studying English history and politics at Harvard and becoming a naval war hero in 1945, Kennedy began his political career by representing his Massachusetts district in the U.S. House of Representatives. In 1953, he was elected a U.S. Senator. At the beginning of the 1960 presidential race, it appeared that his opponent, Richard Nixon, was in the lead. One of Kennedy’s obstacles was his religion; he was only the second Roman Catholic ever nominated for the presidency and many feared that his decisions would be subject to Vatican influence. Kennedy overcame these differences and won the 1960 election, becoming the nation’s 35th president. ********** Between 1958 and 1960, Kennedy extensively campaigned across the United States, making appearances in Portland, Oregon on at least 24 separate occasions. On May 15, 1960 he held a Young People for Kennedy rally and threw out the first pitch for a Little League game and on other occasions he spoke at the chamber of commerce, high schools and colleges and local Democratic Party functions. His frequent trips to Portland as well as other towns and cities in Oregon was motivated by the fact that the state was one of only 15 at that time that held primary elections. Oregon’s primary was held in May 1960 and Kennedy beat Oregon Senator Wayne Morse 51% to 40%. ********** Some dust staining and wear. Framed with a portrait of Kennedy and two plaques bearing a biography and description. Not examined out of the frame.
