Book Details: The author was the surgeon aboard the Alceste, serving under Captain Murray Maxwell. Their voyage was unexpectedly interrupted when they shipwrecked in the Gaspar Strait (in modern Indonesia), connecting the Java Sea to the South China Sea, and became marooned on a nearby island. the crew suffered from food shortage and attacks by Malay pirates, and were eventually rescued by a British merchant ship.
Condition / Notes: This is the third edition of this work. The antique volume is bound in red quarter-leather with marbled paper covers. The spine shows raised bands and stamped gilt lettering. There is light external rubbing concentrated at the edges. There is some weakness to the front hinge. The armorial bookplate of Robert E. Nuese Jr. appears on the front pastedown. The book has marble endpapers. The pages show mild age toning and occasional offsetting. The frontispiece depicts Captain Murray Maxwell. The work is lavishly illustrated with five hand-colored plates and a fold-out map.
