Author: John Mullan - John Mullan, Jr. (July 31, 1830 – December 28, 1909) was an American soldier, explorer, civil servant, and road builder. After graduating from the United States Military Academy in 1852, he joined the Northern Pacific Railroad Survey, led by Isaac Stevens. He extensively explored western Montana and portions of southeastern Idaho, discovered Mullan Pass, and led the construction crew which built the Mullan Road in Montana, Idaho, and Washington state between the spring of 1859 and summer 1860. Condition / Notes: This antique volume has been handsomely rebound in half-leather with marbled paper covers. There is stamped gilt lettering on the spine. The exterior is in excellent condition. The binding is solid. The book is adorned with marbled endpapers. This volume lacks the title page, and pages 1-2 are offered in facsimile. The pages show mild age toning. The work is profusely illustrated with seven color plates and one amber plate. The work contains four large fold-out maps: three bound in, and a fourth in a pocket at the end of the text.
The book is protected by a clear mylar dust jacket.
