Shrine Visit. Original color woodblock print, published around 1790. Part of a triptych. Signed: Shuncho ga. Seal: Churin.
About Shuncho, who was presumably a student of Shunsho, is little known. His artistic role model was found in the mature work of Kiyonaga. Shuncho counts as meaningful representative of the Katsukawa School, who particularly achieved great fame in the Tenmei Era. In his pictures, executed with sensitive economy of drawing and color, the explicit harmony of line and form warrants very great attention. Gentle undulation and flow are felt everywhere, fulfilled by the classical refinement of the 18th century.
In erotic genre Shuncho counts among the most prominant Ukiyo-e-artists ever. In this special area he surpasses his master Shunsho, as well as his brilliant role model Kiyonaga. Only Utamaro could keep pace with him. Without detailed knowledge, it is often difficult to discern the erotic works between these two luminaries.
