Lot 17: KERR, Louisa (1800-85).  A small decorative case, c.1835, containing leaves with various inscriptions including an Ms by the astronomer Caroline Herschel (1750-1848), stating, "Miss Kerr desires me to write something for her stam-book (so I believe it is called) I would rather comply with any other commands she would be pleased to honour me with, than to write something when I have nothing to say. But if on seeing my address Miss Kerr will think on me some times, I shall yet believe to have been writing to some purpose. Miss Caroline Herschel 376 Braunschiseiger Strasse Hannover 1836". Other figures who have signed and inscribed leaves in the case include Augusta Duchess of Cambridge, William of Hesse., Charlotte Princess of Hesse, Mary Princess of Anhalt Dessau, Adolphus Frederick, "George" (Hanover December 5th 1836), George, Prince of Mecklenburg. Also included is a pencil sketch of a castellated tower, annotated on the verso in pencil: "The Grubenhagen, drawn by Princess Louisa of Hesse ... Oct 1835". Provenance: "The gift of Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge at Offenbach, September 7th 1835" (inscription on the interior of the case). Blue board case, with floral decorations in gilt and red (lightly rubbed) and green cloth slipcase.
