Notes: Khalil Ibrahim is renowned for his superb watercolour painting, atmospheric oils, delicate batiks and intriguing acrylics. He was born in 1934, at Kubang Kelantanese, Kelantan, on the East Coast of what was then Malaya (now Malaysia). As a young boy his burgeoning artistic talent surfaced in a love for making wayang kulit (traditional Kelantanese shadow play puppets). When Khalil was at art school in England, he drafted village views and images of the sceneries he has seen, as observed in this piece. Khalil recorded what he saw and felt, both to practice his art and to record for future use, and the end product is always breathtaking. Khalil Ibrahim graduated from the prestigious St. Martin’s School of Art & Design, United Kingdom in 1964. Thereafter, he became a full-time artist and has been so for fifty years now. He has held solo and group exhibitions in Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and Switzerland, with most of his works center around figures and are heavily influenced by East Coast fishermen and women.
