Description: Kidgell, John. THE CARD. London: Printed for the Maker and sold by J. Newberry, 1755. 2 vols, 12mo. [2], xvi, [2], 264, [4]; [2], 306, [6] pp. + hand-colored frontis and one other plate (both in volume one.) 20th c. green cloth with titles to spines in gilt. Frontis with some stains and bleeding of color, else contents with only some consistent age-toning and occasional minor stains, Very Good. ************************* First Edition. The present work is thought to contain the earliest surviving use of the word "Base-ball" to signify the game as we know it today. The work was Kidgell's only novel, being a burlesque satire of Edward Young.
