Description: Eight-rayed silver breast star produced in Prussia (Wagner, Berlin) with threaded medallion and gilt attachment pin. The gilt appliqué depicts a reduced size order decoration from the original 1st model of the order in 1881, with green (chips) and blue, irregular alternating points and curved ends. At centre is the Chinese double dragon standing upright in silver around the engraved coral on a white-enamelled corona. The inscription (tr.) "Bestowed by the Great Ch'ing Dynasty" in black-enamelled Han- and Man-characters (the latter also with the class designation). Width 89.2 mm. Weight 110 g. A breast star of museum significance in the so-called "transitional model" of this order from 1896 to 1902 during the attempted rapprochement of the Chinese orders system with that of the West. A nearly identical star, likewise of Prussian manufacture, was documented in the Guido Mühlemann collection. For the transitional model of this order see Tammann/Zimmermann: Anmerkungen zum kaiserlich-chinesischen Orden vom Doppelten Drachen (Remarks on the Imperial Chinese Order of the Double Dragon), in: O&E of the BDOS Issue 7, June 2000. This decoration is one of those awarded by Viceroy Li Hong-Zhang (1823 - 1901). As a general he quelled numerous rebellions, and as "Viceroy of Zhili" was one of the most powerful men in China during the Qing dynasty. He met Prince Otto von Bismarck during a state visit to Germany in 1896, and during this trip deepened his relationship with Krupp, whose business delivered cannon and rail road material to China. It was decreed that these decorations were produced in the respective countries of said state visits.
