Lot 35: LARGE AND ELABORATE CULT VESSEL
19 November 2016
Vienna, Vienna, AustriaLive Auction
Silver and yellow-bronze. Tibet, 19th century
A museal, elaborately magnificent and intricately crafted cult vessel of newer shape, partly engraved and possibly with repoussé, with various sections covered with casted and carefully crafted parts. The vessel raised on a flared foot with encircling lotus pattern to pass into a globular body with incised floral decoration and some sections of separately crafted and attached parts, showing two lobed reserves depicting arhat or siddha with animals amidst a landscape and an elephant with a monkey on its back. The shoulder offers a masterly executed relief border of clouds, fruits and abstract heads of mythical creatures which is repeated on the neck section. The domed cover is crowned by encircling lotus and terminates with a lotus knob above. A massive chain connects the cover to the arched handle, crafted in shape of a scaled dragon displaying an expressive head. The spout presents the very impressive head of a dragon or makhara. An exquisite vessel! Very good condition.

From an Austrian collection, afterwards collection Sohel Ch., New-Delhi - Vienna
A noteworthy share of the antiques offered here – around 130 lots – originate from the Collection Sohel Ch., a successful business man from Delhi who spent many years in Vienna. The part of his collection, which we here offer, was mainly acquired in the art trade of Vienna. The chief reason for his collecting activity, which he perpetuated with considerable specialized knowledge, sense for quality and great committment, was to establish a private Asian museum in his native city of New Delhi. Because of severe illness, it was impossible for him to realize his plan and he thus decided to submit us the entire complex of his "Viennese collection" for sale.
