Description: Fitzherbert, Sir Anthony. LA GRAUNDE ABRIDGEMENT, COLLECTE PAR LE IUDGE…. London: Tottelli, 1577 [Bound With] LA SECOUNDE PART DU GRAUND ABRIDGEMENT…." with same imprint/date. 10.5" x 7.5". Each part with title page set within ornate architectural woodcut borders. First few leaves with large stains, institutional ink-stamps to first title and leaf D2, some manuscript notations in an early hand in places throughout, some faded water-stains in places (mostly marginal), a few instances of soiling, edge-toning, a few marginal chips (corners, etc.), Good+. ************************************** Fitzherbert's work "was an enormous enterprise for its day, a massive digest of 13,845 cases from the year-books arranged under alphabetical headings" (ODNB.) First published in 1514 in a different form, this work represents the first serious attempt to reduce Common Law into a systematic form, and it was relied upon by lawyers as a reference throughout the 16th century.
