Lot 686: LE MANDARIN
29 October 2016
Brussels, BelgiumLive Auction
Description: 17 July 1826 CHINA. PARIS. Action de F5000. Serie 2. black. No 17. The ship 'Mandarin', of 291 tons, was built in Marseille in 1826. She was to call in California, the Hawaiian Islands for trading, and from there to Canton. On its return to Marseille, the freight would be sold, and profits distributed among the shareholders. At that time, Chinese goods were mostly imported into France by foreign ships, and subject to very high customs tariffs. Since the 'Mandarin' flew the French flag, customs tariffs were only half as high (with the exception of sugar). The expedition was promoted by Seillière & Cie, of Paris, and the captain was M. des Etangs. A most unusual piece, and a very late example of a share for a particular expedition, although this was the usual method of financing the operations of the early overseas trading companies of Europe. Rarity 9.
