Lot 1002: LIVERPOOL, MANCHESTER AND NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE JUNCTION RAILWAY
29 October 2016
Brussels, BelgiumLive Auction
Description: 1 August 1846 Cert. of £20 Share. black, red seal. No 47691. Shows the arms of the company in the design and on the seal. The arms incorporate those of all three cities served. Formed to link Settle, Hawas and Askrigg (North Yorkshire) with a connection to the Great North of England Railway. However, the scheme failed and it was not until the late 1860s that the Midland Railway took over the project. The lot comes with a small piece of paper with the original autograph of George Stephenson (1781-1848), the "Father of Railways". He built for instance the firstpublic inter-city railway line in the world to use steam locomotives, the Liverpool and Manchester Railway (1830 and played an important role in the Stockton & Darlington Railway (see lot 993). His autograph is extremely rare.
