Shinshinto. Japan, 18th century – late Edo
The blade is in classical form with Shinogizukuri and Iorimune, the Kissaki of medium size. The Hamon with vivid Midare and some tendencies to Choji. The Nakago mumei has two Ana, the Yasurime is kiri, the end probably shortened and Kirijiri.
The Koshirae consists of brown leather coating of the wooden Saya. The rounded quadratic Tsuba is large with a small Hitsu and depicts a Ni-O. The Ni-O (“two kings”) are athletic guardian deities at the temple gates, the Nio-Mon. The Nio, depicted on this Tsuba, is surrounded by a garland and holds a Kongo (Vajra) in one of his hands. On the backside a part of the Nio-Mon with small writings, probably votiv notes. Furthermore over the surface Ishimeji. Iron Fuchi-Kashira with differently coloured horses inlaid in Takazogan, the Menuki in floral composition.
