Description: FRANCE, CIRCA 1750-1850 A fine French bronze equestrian group of Louis XIV after a model by Martin van den Bogaert (1637-1694), also known as Desjardins. The original sculpture was erected in 1713 but later destroyed during the French Revolution. This work has grown into one of the most favored depictions of the Sun King with its direct influence from the Equestrian Statue of Marcus Aurelius. Desjardins' equestrian model was a huge success in the early beginnings of neoclassicism in France. The work was finely cast with intricate detail. Louis XIV is depicted on horseback seated confidently with rein in one hand and the other resting on his staff. His sword is fully detailed with the Sun King symbol in relief. The sculpture sits upon an ormolu mounted red speckle marble base. The bronze ormolu base frame is heavily detailed with a rope twist acanthus leaf design in high relief supported by curled acanthus leaf feet. The underside exhibits hand made nut and rod mounts. Truly a fine quality example of an iconic work.

Condition Report: Very good condition.

Dimensions: 13" long by 7" deep by 16 1/2" tall.
