Brunet III, 1264; Tchemerzine-Scheler, 250. Two volumes. 8° (182x110 mm). XX, 453, [1] (of 3, wanting the last blank leaf); VIII, 427, [1] pages. Woodcut tool on the title pages, woodcut head-pieces and tail-pieces. A fair copy, uncut, browning on some leaves. Contemporary vellum, gilt titles on painter littering piece on the spines. First edition of this work of the philosopher and politician Gabriel Bonnot de Mably, older brother of the economist Etienne Bonnot de Condillac. Mably was one of the main protagonists of the international politic during the 18th century in France, and as forerunner of social concepts and visions that are going to succeed in the revolutionary climate. The work had a profound weight on the first resolutions of the General Assembly: Mably was proud supporter of economic and social changes such as the abolition of private property as well as the principles of natural human equality or superiority of virtue on wealth. Even his thoughts on the newly-formed America helped make the famous work beyond French borders. Brunet III, 1264; Tchemerzine-Scheler, 250.
