Commentaire : La connaissance de cet artiste nordique actif en Italie du Nord fit un pas de géant lorsqu''en 2010 Maurizio Canesso organisa sa grande exposition1 autour de neuf toiles du maîtres, c''est-à-dire autour du corpus presque complet de cet artiste rare. Redécouvrir six ans après une nouvelle toile de ce maître est un véritable plaisir.
Cette personnalité fut pour la première fois présentée comme le Maestro della tela jeans par Gerlinde Gruber lors d''un colloque organisé à Ljubljana fin 2005, puis dans un article monographique paru en 20072. Proche des œuvres de Michael Sweerts ou Bernardo Keil, la palette de notre artiste se caractérise par l''emploi d''une tonalité de bleu froid et dense qui rappelle la toile de Gênes. Cette épaisse toile bleue aux fils de chaine blancs, produite à Gênes mais aussi à Plaisance et à Milan, était réservée aux couches sociales les plus modestes. Aujourd''hui communément appelé la toile de Jeans elle donna, par extension, son nom au fameux blue jeans rendu célèbre à travers le monde grâce à la marque Lewis. Qui ne possède pas son jean ? Plus rare sont les tableaux du maître de la toile de jeans…

Un test de nettoyage sur notre tableau - sur l''épaule du jeune garçon et sur la manche de la vieille femme - nous permet de redécouvrir ce fameux bleu que l''on retrouve sur chacune des œuvres de l''artiste. Des scènes de vie ou de repas modestes aux nappes déchirées et à la nourriture frugale dans une atmosphère de clair-obscur traitée sur un fond neutre, voilà les sujets qu''affectionne l''artiste.
Chacun des éléments de notre tableau se retrouve sur d''autres toiles de l''artiste ; la vieille femme, le jeune garçon, la nappe déchirée et le bol en terre cuite vernissée sont présents dans d''autres oeuvres du peintre exposées à la galerie Canesso en 2010.

Le sujet de notre tableau nous semble presque christique : la vielle femme, pauvre, amaigrie et les yeux malades, regarde fixement à la fois l''observateur de la toile mais plus généralement l''infini, l''absolu. Son regard est à la fois vide et plein. Elle est déjà sacrifiée, elle semble désincarnée par le don de soi. Le petit garçon aux joues rondes et rosées dévore le met pourtant bien modeste que lui a laissé la vieille femme. Si elle est déjà partie, ce jeune garçon a la vie devant lui et profitera pleinement de ce repas. Plus qu''une simple scène de la vie modeste au XVIIe siècle, ce sujet nous semble marqué d''une certaine noblesse et porteur d''un message plein d''humanité.
