Description: Manuscript letter on single leaf, folded. From Jean Baptiste Boisduval to John George Children, circa 1836. 9.75" x 8". Creased as folded, small hole to center near fold, some light soiling, early paper repair to a marginal chip (on blank panel), refer to photos. *********************************** Jean Baptiste Boisduval (1799-1879) was a French botanist and lepidopterist (butterflies and moths.) The letter is addressed to John George Children who was a British chemist and zoologist. The letter is essentially a request from Boisduval that Children would send him a sample Lepidoptera from New Holland or Guinea; Boisduval explains that he is updating his work on Lepidoptera and that the samples would be of use in his endeavor. Almost certainly, he is referring to his "Species General des Lepidopteres, " published in 1836. French entomologist Louis Alexandre August Chevrolat is also mentioned in the letter. A full, typed English translation of the letter is included with this item.
