Description: Manuscript legal document on vellum, dated 1612, with wax seal affixed, signed by Morton on verso. 10.5" x 9.75". Creased as folded with moderate toning and soiling. ***************************** Thomas Morton sailed to America in the early 1620s and found himself at odds with the Puritan community who found his religious views intolerable. He founded the small colony of Mount Wollaston at the present-day site of Quincy, Massachusetts, and the colony was later renamed Merry Mount. He was banished and returned to England after erecting a Maypole and conducting a 'worldly' celebration, "As if they had anew revived and celebrated the feasts of ye Roman Goddess Flora, or ye beastly practices of ye mad Bacchanalians" (as Gov. William Bradford would write.) Morton would later publish his influential work, "New English Canaan" (1637), in which he denounced the Puritan government and defended the native population.
