Description: MARITIME HISTORY - TRAVELLING -- SNELLIUS, W. Tiphys Batavus, sive histiodromice, de navium cursibus et re navali. Leiden, Elzevier, 1624. (56), 109, (2), 62, (2) pp. W. 2 engr. plates depicting ships, 1 full-p. engr. depicting the Rose of the Winds & num. numerical tables. 4°. Cont. cf. In mod. cloth box. (Rebacked w. or. spine, upper joint split, bind. chafed, corners bumped, outer margin "Rose of the Winds" cut shortly, slightly browned). Snellius' work, aptly called Tiphys after the name of the pilot of the ship of the Argonauts, is an early mathematical treatise on navigation, with propositions and answers on navigation at sea, plotting directions and calculating longitude and latitude. At the end are printed loxodromic tables, calculating the position of the rhumb lines to the meridian, and their use is explained. The work must be set against the expansion of 17th-century Dutch trade and shipping and the demand for scholarly solutions to practical problems. Snellius (1580-1626) was Professor of Mathematics at the Leiden University. He learned part of his craft from Tycho Brahe, and befriended Kepler, who deemed him subtilissimum mathematicorum. - Willems, 224; Brunet V, 420; Rahir, 190; Bierens de Haan, 4397; Cat. NHSM, p. 664; DSB XII, 499-502; Norman Library, 1964 and Norman Sale, 796. - With bookplate of Haskell F. Norman.
