Description: This is an antique maritime nautical folk art downrigger lead weight paint decorated and fish shape from New England circa 1900. A downrigger is a device used while fishing using the trolling method, which places a lure at the desired depth. A downrigger consists of a three to six-foot horizontal pole that supports a weight, generally 10 to 15 pounds by a steel cable. The 10 pound weight was made in the shape of a fish and still retains some of its original green paint. The 10 pound weight is made of lead with metal hooks on the top fin and at the back end of the fish for attaching to the steel cable. The 10 pound lead fish weight shows age appropriate patina and wear from decades of use. Like windmill and gate weights, down rigger weights today are an early form of American Folk Art and would make an excellent door stop or book weight on a beautiful shelf.
Condition Report: Excellent condition with age appropriate wear and patina.
Dimensions: 9 1/2 inches long, 3 inches wide and 3 inches tall
