Description: (MARITIME)
Whole-plate ambrotype portrait of a dapper figure, purportedly Capt. George W. Dodge (1830- ?), master of the whaling bark Superior (New Bedford, Massachusetts).
Dodge is holding a sextant, with a telescope on the table adjacent to him; beautifully hand-tinted; the image measuring 8 1/2x6 3/4 inches (21.6x17.1 cm.); the eleborate Victorian frame 13x11 1/2 inches (33x29.2 cm.). 1856

Notes: According to a contemporary exhibition label on the obverse of the frame, Dodge was formerly an officer on the whaler Gay Head, and later became a businessman in Manchester, New Hampshire. This image is attributed to Charles Hawes, whose studio was located in New Bedford, Massachusetts.
