Description: Twain, Mark. FORTY THREE DAYS IN AN OPEN BOAT. As published in Harper's New Monthly Magazine, No. 199, December, 1866. Original printed paper wrappers, rear wrapper loose and spine portion chipping with loss, both covers with light stains. Contents with a few small and minor stains, but a rather clean and bright copy free from the typical toning and browning. A Very Good example. ******************************* “Forty-three Days in an Open Boat” appears on pages 104-113 and is an account of the a clipper ship that caught fire in the ocean. Twain referred to this work as the “first magazine article I ever published,” but he had published articles in other periodicals under different names such as Snodgrass, Blab, and others. This was Twain's first article under the "Twain" name, though it was misattributed to Mark "Swain" in the index of the bound issues.
