Title: Letter of the Secretary of War, Communicating, in Answer to a Resolution of the Senate of the 6th Instant, a Copy of the Report and Journal of Captain Medorem Crawford, Commanding the Emigrant Escort to Oregon and Washington Territory in the Year 1862.
Author: Medorem Crawford - Medorem Crawford (June 24, 1819 – March 24, 1893) was an American soldier and politician in what became the state of Oregon. A native of the state of New York, he immigrated to the Oregon Country in 1842 where he participated in the Champoeg Meetings and served in the resulting Provisional Government of Oregon as a legislator. A Republican, he later served in the Oregon House of Representatives after statehood and was appointed to several federal government offices. During the American Civil War he escorted emigrants over the Oregon Trail.

Book Details: Day-by-day journal of Captain Medorem Crawford, who was "charged with protecting emigrant trains crossing the plains in 1861, '62, and '63. The above is the only printed report by the military escort that we have been able to locate. The party of 1862 left Fort Stanton, four miles from Omaha, on June 16, traveling by way of Fort Kearny, Fort Laramie, the Lander Cutoff, to Grand Ronde and finally arriving at Walla Walla on October 14. Most of the emigrants, however, were heading for he Salmon River mines and dropped off the march before its completion" - Wagner-Camp.
