METEOROLOGY -- VOLTA, A. Sulla formazione della grandine. Memoria. Con un articolo sul medesimo argomento del A. Bellani. Milan, Tipogr. & Libr. Manini, 1824. 170, (2) pp. Cont. hcf. (Inner lower hinge broken (another work bound together has been removed), ti-p. a bit stained, else fine). First edition in book form. It contains the contributions of both Volta and Bellani to the question how hail is formed. “According to his much admired theory of hail, evaporation abstracts both heat and electricity from vaporizing droplets, creating microscopic ice seeds, which dance about electrical forces in their parent cloud, growing at the expense of surrounding droplets until they become too heavy for the ballet, and fall to the ground” (DSB). Bellani instead attributed hail formation to the effect of athmospheric electricity which causes aqueous vapor of lower clouds to dilate as a consequence of heat of e. g. lightning, with formation of ice aggregates. When rain passes through these lower clouds it comes into contact with this ice and hail is formed. - DSB XIV, 69-82.
