Description: Mexico, 1949 CE. This is a simply painted tin retablo that is clearly readable. It shows a man praying in a blue-walled room before a variety of figures, including the crucified Christ, Mary and Child, a saint on horseback, and another representation of Mary. The text at the bottom is clearly readable: "En el Ano de 1946. El dia 7 de Febrero. El Sr. Rafael Villafuerte, estando gravemente enfermo de una fistula. Peniendo 5 anos le enfermo viendo que no onseguia alivio, acudio a la ciencia medica y fua operado y al cavo de 7 dias consiguio la salud por medio de estas milagrosas imagenes que … corazon de gracias y … su promesa. Cuenda, 18 de JUNIO DE 1949." This translates roughly to: "In the year 1946, on the 7th of February, Mr. Rafael Villafuerte, was seriously ill from a fistula. He had been sick for five years with no relief from scientific medicine. Through miraculous images, within seven days he became healed. He gives thanks, and this was recorded on 18 June 1949." The retablo has been painted using a found object, a part of a metal advertisement sign. Size: 10.5" W x 6.95" H (26.7 cm x 17.7 cm)
