Description: the record-breaking clipper ship in full sail, watercolour and ink with scratching out, 360 x 260mm., signed lower left, titled on the backboard, framed and glazed . The American-built cliiper ship, "Red Jacket, broke the record for a trans-Atlantic crossing on her maiden voyage in from New York to Liverpool in 13 days and 1 hour, in 1853. She then became the first ship to be acquired by the White Star Line, sailing regularly to Australia for many years. Later, she was reduced to coastal work around Australia and India, before a spell transporting lumber from Canada to England, and finally ending her days off Madeira, in the 1880s.
