Description: 1 July 1848 LIEGE. BLEYBERG. Obligation de F500. black. #3000. No 1348. Lead and zinc were mined in the area, near Liège, in the 14th century. In 1825 a concession was given to the Cockerill brothers. 1846 saw the formation of this company, for efficient working of the deposits. The most important shareholders were the Cockerill family, the brothers Suermondt and the family Lampson. They were financially supported by the bankers Lafitte and Oppenheim. It expanded and grew to become a leading Belgian company in the 19th century. After problems of flooding, pollution and poor transport, a new works was opened in 1922 in northern France, more convenient in various ways, and the Bleyberg works was allowed to close. An important certificate for the industrial history of Belgium and extremely rare.
