Estimate: $1,000 - $1,500
Pre-Columbian, Guerrero Region, Mexico, ca. 300-100 BCE. A stone pendant in the form of a miniature household object, a skin bag, worked from a green serpentine cobble into a finely delineated and polished form. These household items were used as receptacles for liquids with rectangular handles and a protrusion at the bottom. While actual skin bags and gourds have not survived the test of time, this amulet is an outstanding example of sculpture that sheds light on the everyday domestic life of the Mezcala. Measures 3" long. Note: For a similar example, see Christies Sale 1537, Lot 37 - price realized $1793.
Provenance: Ex-Adeon Gallery, Chicago, IL, acquired prior to 1970.
