Description: [Martin, David.] HISTOIRE DU VIEUX ET DU NOUVEAU TESTAMENT, ENRICHIE DE PLUS DE QUATRE CENT FIGURES EN TAILLE-DOUCE . . . . Amsterdam: Pierre Mortier, 1700. 2 vol. Folio (16.5" x 10.5".) Complete with 2 additional engraved titles, 214 plates, and 5 double-page maps. Numerous engraved tailpieces. Period crimson morocco with boards paneled in gilt, rebacked, the whole with chips and scuffs, front board of second volume detached. Various (mostly minor) flaws to contents: Engraved bookplates of Robert Hood to pastedowns, some occasional light foxing and minor stains, half-titles detached, some leaves with faded waterstains (maps at end of second volume, first few leaves of first volume, upper margins near end of first volume), two leaves with marginal repairs, one engraved title with short closed tear, last section of second volume with small hole to pages (including maps, see photos), a handful of plates toned. Overall contents are clean and Very Good. ****************************** The "Great Mortier Bible," published simultaneously in Antwerp and Amsterdam. The work features a profusion of plates after designs by Elliger, Goeree, Hoet, Bernard Picard, Tiedeman, and Luychen. The double-page maps are impressive as well including an interesting map of the world depicting California as an island. [Cohen 489-491]
