Description: ( Emperor of the French ).- Le Sacre de S.M. l'Empereur Napoléon dans l'Eglise Métropolitaine de Paris le XII Frimaire An XIII, Dimanche 2 Décembre 1804 , engraved title, "description" leaf and 39 plates of processions, ceremonies, costumes and uniforms after Fontaine, Isabey and Perder, little spotting, front free endpaper & fly-ll creased, contemporary brown morocco, gilt, covers with broad border incorporating wreathed eagles and 'N's, 'Colnaghi Cockspur Street' in upper cover inner dentelle, rubbed and scuffed, upper joint cracked, small split to head of lower joint, ends of spine and corners little worn, g.e., large folio (c. 650 x 450 mm.) , [Paris, Imprimerie Imperiale , 1806]. One of only 100 copies printed of a splendid record of Napoleon's coronation ceremonies. It was not in fact published until the time of his downfall, with the result that many copies were sequestrated; some, however, were acquired by the artists involved and others later by members of the old imperial and new royal households. Colnaghi's, established in Paris in 1760 and thus probably the oldest commercial art dealership in the world, moved to London in 1785 and opened their Cockspur Street premises in 1799.
