Description: Navolger van Thomas Gainsborough (1727-1788) Portrait of Frederick Howard, 5th Earl of Carlisle (1748-1828). Verso: Inscription 'Copy of inscription on original canvas / Lord Carlisle Naworth / T. G. 1765' and a label with inscription. Provenance: Auction The Nelson and Eloise Davis Collection, Toronto; Christie's New York, 4 June 2003, lot 170. Frederick Howard inherited the title 5th Earl of Carlisle in 1758 and occupied a series of other important functions, such as President of the Board of Trade in 1779, Viceroy of Ireland in 1780 and Lord Privy Seal in 1783. He became a member of The Most Noble Order of the Garter in 1793. Apart from this he was a writer and playwright and wrote The Father's Revenge in 1783, which appealed particularly to Horace Warpole.
