Description: Norfolk Regiment First War Military Cross & casualty, Victory Medal (2.LIEUT. W.J. BRUMBLEY) Walter James Brumbley enlisted with the Northumberland Fusiliers Acting Sergeant, transferred to the Norfolk Regiment 3rd Battalion attached to the 7th Battalion, Walter James Brumbley was killed in action 27th March 1918 aged 20. Gazetted 22nd April 1918, '2nd Lt. Walter James Brumbley, Norf. R. Spec. Res. For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. When in command of a selection of a party raiding the hostile trenches, he led his men into the enemy line and took a prominent part in the sharp fight which ensued, accounting for four of the enemy himself. Having bombed some dug-outs, he established a defensive flank, until with withdrawal was ordered. Throughout the operation he showed exceptional courage and coolness, memorial to Second Lieutenant Walter James Brumbley is at Pozieres Memorial panel 23, (1)
