NUMISMATICS -- VELAZQUEZ (de Velasco), L.J. Ensayo sobre los alfabetos de las letras desconocidas, que se encuentran en las mas antiguas medallas, y monumentos de España. Madrid, A. Sanz, 1752. (16), 163, (5) pp. W. engr. ti-vign., 3 engr. head- and tailpieces & 20 engr. plates (7 depicting alphabets and 13 coins). 4°. 19th c. green hcf. (Spine loosely inserted, corners bumped, else a very good copy). Luis Joseph Velazquez de Velasco (1722-1772) was a reputed historian who authored several works. The present one is his first essentially numismatic work. The problem dealt with by Velazquez was the presence of words and sentences written in unknown characters, present on coinage and inscriptions. Velasquez compares these alphabets with those of the people who had been in contact with Spain and, as a consequence of that, recognizes the existence of three different alphabets (Celtiberian, Tudetan and Bastulo-Phoenician), the first two with some similarities to Greek. - Brunet V, 1116; Palau VII, 142.
