White heron flying in a storm. Kacho-e, Original color woodblock print, published around 1910´s. Signed: Koson. Seal: Koson. Publisher: Daikokuya (ohne Angaben). On the back, little stamp “Made in Japan“.
Kosons collaboration with various publishers in Tokyo began during the early 1900´s. His main interest was for traditional flower and bird painting (Kacho-e) according to nature studies, in which he soon found his own unmistakable style. Koson´s first works were published by Kokkeido, a publishing house whose owner was Akiyama Buemon - once Yoshitoshis most important publisher. Soon following, also Daikokuya, a publishing house which presided over Matsjuki Heikichi, committed to the young artist. Typical for Kosons earlier woodblocks from this time are dark, muted colors and a preference for vertical format.
