Description: OLIVER, A. Essai sur les cometes. Amst., M.-M. Rey, 1777. xxviii, 147 pp. W. 1 engr. fold. plate. Old (worn) wrps., uncut. (A bit dog-eared, else fine). First French edition of the earliest American book on comets; the first edition in English had been published in Salem (Massachusetts) in 1772. Andrew Oliver (1731-1799), an American jurist and scientist, wrote a number of other books on disparate subjects and was one of the founders of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a member of the American Philosophical Society. This French translation was the work of Jacques Allamand (1713-87), a professor of physics at Leyden University. - Brüning (Bibliographie der Kometenliteratur), 1835; Lalande, 560; cf. Sabin, 57199 and Honeyman, 2360 for the English edition; both editions not in Houzeau-Lancaster.
